Sometimes when I crave for something sweet, I don’t just go for cakes and cookies. Sometimes I go for pies.
What’s great about pies is that it has the crispy crust on the outside and a warm, soft filling on the inside. Just the perfect texture combination for a cold season and my favourite type of pie is the classic apple pie. And this is going to be your go-to apple pie recipe. Why? Well, not only is it delicious, it’s also very simple to make!
THE HISTORY OF APPLE PIE
Apple pie dates back all the way to 14th-century England. Back then, it was made with different ingredients such as figs and saffron. Today, the classic apple pie is generally made of a buttery crust with a cinnamon-spiced apple filling on the inside.
There are many variations to the apple pie, including adding raisins or has a crumbly top instead of the classic lattice pattern on top. Still, most notably, apple pie has been considered a comfort food throughout history until today. Even modernized apple pies give you a sense of a warm, comfort food.
THE BEST MAPLE APPLE PIE

The type of apple pie we will make in this recipe is the classic, lattice pattern apple pie.
The first thing you need to do in this recipe is making that crispy, buttery crust. The main thing you need to make sure when making the crust is not to let the butter melt. You only need a few ingredients but the most important ingredient is the butter. Cold butter is key to get that layered crispy crust. If the butter melts too much, you will instead get more of a sandy type of crust, comes near to a cookie dough.
The second thing you need to do is make the filling. The type of apple you need to use is also very important. Most people use honeycrisp apples or golden delicious apples, but for me, I choose to use granny smith apples.
Granny smith, for me, is the best when it comes to making apple pies. Granny smith apples holds its structure while also giving the perfect amount of tartness to balance the sweetness of the filling. Instead of honey, I chose to use maple syrup to balance out the sweetness. Most people use a combination of sugar and honey, but I prefer maple syrup as it gives off a better overall taste and aroma.
Lastly, apple pies are usually covered with a top layer of crust. For this recipe, you will also learn how to make a lattice pattern on top of the pie so it will give that classic pie look. And to make the top look even more delicious, you will top it off with some egg wash and brown sugar.
SERVING THE APPLE PIE
Apple pies are best when served warm, just a few minutes after baking. You have options to top it off with some ice cream, whipped cream, or just enjoy it how it is!
However you choose to serve your apple pie is up to you! So grab your whisk and start baking!
Some tips that might be useful:
- When making the pie crust, make sure that the butter does not melt completely. Small chunks of cold butter in your dough helps form the crispy layers.
- Make sure to roll the dough bigger than your pie mould so it fits easily and you can always cut the excess.
- You have the option to add your own toppings to the pie but personally I like it better like this.
